CONCRETE

AES has provided structural engineering services for new and old concrete structures for decades. Our new design projects have involved various systems including cast-in-place, post-tensioned, and pre-stressed precast among other concrete systems. Types of structures we have designed include:

  • Concrete flat plate office buildings

  • Precast concrete garages and parking decks

  • Cast-in-place post-tensioned garages

  • Cast-in-place post-tensioned residential complexes

  • Post-tensioned concrete foundation systems

  • Structures combining load-bearing masonry or steel systems with precast concrete decking

Nearly all of our foundation systems for structures involve some elements of cast-in-place concrete. We have also extended and added elements to existing concrete structures, where codes and construction practices can determine and limit potential options.

For projects involving repairs or rehabilitation work for existing concrete structures, AES carries out comprehensive consultation involving:

  • A structural and corrosion assessment by our experts involving visual and delamination or sounding surveys of the exposed areas to determine the extent, location, and form of deterioration

  • Concrete material and corrosion testing, if found to be necessary, is typically undertaken by our trusted third-party specialty firms

  • Acoustic testing or other more extensive testing programs designed to isolate the cause and limits of failure, which can include compressive strength testing, depth of carbonation testing, chloride ion testing, measurement of concrete cover over reinforcing steel, petrographic analysis, and half-cell potential testing

Once the mechanism responsible is determined, recommendations for repair/rehabilitation can be established, along with service life expectations.
